Texas Murder Mystery Dinner Train Rides (2026)
Published: May 6, 2026
By: Adam Burns
Murder mystery dinner trains are immersive theatrical experiences that take passengers on a journey not just on a scenic trip, but also through a night of intrigue, suspense, and culinary delight.
Bridges, tunnels, and sunsets provide a perfect backdrop as passengers play detectives in solving a thrilling murder mystery.
Unfortunately, as of 2026 there are no such train rides currently available in Texas. However, as recently as 2023 the Austin Steam Train Association was hosting such an experience and with several top notch excursions found throughout the state - such as the Texas State Railroad and Grapevine Vintage Railroad - perhaps these trips will soon return.

A New Twist on the Classic Whodunit
Dining on a moving train is an experience steeped in both romance and nostalgia, evoking images of elegant dinners shared as the landscape rolls by. Adding an interactive murder mystery elevates this experience to an entirely different level of entertainment.
Guests are not mere spectators but become part of the unfolding drama. Each train ride transforms into a stage where passengers gather clues, interrogate suspects played by actors, and piece together the evidence to solve the mystery before the final stop.
The Culinary Delight
One of the highlights of this experience is, naturally, the dinner. While each train may offer its specific flair and menu, high-quality meals are a common theme. Chefs often prepare multi-course dinners featuring regional specialties—think Tex-Mex favorites, hearty barbecue-inspired dishes, or refined continental classics, each paired with complementary wine and dessert.
The meals not only satisfy the palate but also serve as natural breaks in the suspenseful drama. As each course is served, it’s another opportunity for passengers to discuss theories, examine clues, or perhaps strike up a surprising conversation with a fellow “suspect.”
The Intrigue of the Interactive Theater
What truly sets murder mystery dinner trains apart from typical dining experiences is the element of interactive theater. Actors are dressed in period costumes, immersing passengers in a different era. They skillfully blend with guests, making it difficult to distinguish between those involved in plotting the night’s drama and other participating diners.
Scripts are crafted to allow passengers to interact with the actors, asking questions or offering accusations. Everyone has the chance to play detective, and part of the thrill comes from engaging so deeply in the world created around them. No two rides are the same, with actors improvising and adapting to the unique dynamic of each group.
Austin Steam Train Association
As recently as 2023 the ASTA hosted the "Wild West Murder Mystery" experience that included a 2 1/2 hour experience with a wild west theme. This event had included the option of dinner on board and alcoholic beverages for those 21 years or older.
More About The Association
The association, based in Austin, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and showcasing the historical significance of steam railroading. Founded in 1992, the association operates the Austin Steam Train, offering scenic train rides through the Texas Hill Country.
The highlight of its collection is the Southern Pacific 2-8-2 #786, a vintage steam locomotive that will eventually be restored to service. Despite the name, their excursions are typically pulled by GP40-3 #3118
Their excursions range from themed rides like murder mystery dinners to family-friendly outings, creating a unique experience for visitors of all ages. The association aims to educate the public about rail history, focusing on the preservation and restoration of its vintage trains.
Volunteers play a significant role in its operations, from maintaining machinery to serving as onboard staff. Through its commitment to historical preservation and community engagement, the ASTA provides an inspiring glimpse into the golden age of rail travel, enriching cultural and historical appreciation in the region.
Final Thoughts
In a world filled with digital entertainment, the analog charm of a train ride combined with a murder mystery creates an unforgettable evening of fun and intrigue.
With each train and theme offering a different mystery to unravel, these experiences invite both the suspense-loving diehards and the casual dinner guest.
