Valentine's Day Train Rides (2024): A Complete Guide

The popularity in heritage railroads over the last 20 years has been largely due to the variety of special events and trips they now offer.  It all began with 2004's movie "The Polar Express." 

This led to excursion trains around the country offering themed holiday trips tailored around a retelling of Chris Van Allsburg's magical tale, The Polar Express.

Since then many organizations now offer an entire array of themed trips for Easter, dinner trains, summer events, Halloween, and now even Valentine's Day.  Provided here is a list of known current organizations which offer such special events, broken down by state.

Alabama 

Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum: The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum, located in Calera, is a captivating testament to the history of American railroading. Established in 1962, the museum showcases a vast collection of trains and railroad equipment, dating from the 19th century to the present day.

Visitors have the chance to explore vintage passenger cars, powerful locomotives, as well as an antique depot. The museum also offers engaging exhibits on southern railroading history, railroad operations, and advancement in railroad technology.

One of its main attractions is the chance to embark on a scenic train ride on the historic Calera & Shelby Railroad. This trip gives an authentic experience of railroad travel in the old times. The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum ensures preserving the rich railroad heritage and providing educational and exciting experiences for all ages.

Children can also enjoy the 'Shelby and Southern Narrow Gauge' steam train rides during special events. It is indeed a haven for train enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

For Valentine's Day they offer the "Sweetheart Special" on the Saturday and Sunday before Valentine's Day.  This excursion travels to the Ozan Winery & Distillery for a tasting of their fine wines.  The event lasts about 1 1/2 hours.:

Arizona

Verde Canyon Railroad:  The Verde Canyon Railroad is a heritage railroad that offers scenic trips through Arizona's beautiful Verde Valley. Known for its wilderness excursion trains, the railroad takes passengers on a breathtaking journey between the towns of Clarkdale and Perkinsville, showcasing the area's diverse flora, fauna, and striking red rock formations.

The unique desert and river scenery can be viewed from vintage train cars, including first-class cars with comfortable seating and open-air viewing cars providing immersive experiences.

The four-hour round trip travels along the Verde River, offering glimpses of native wildlife and historic sites, such as ancient Sinagua Indian ruins. Featured events include seasonal and themed rides like the Eagle Watch, Grape Train Escape, or Ales on Rails.

Overall, the Verde Canyon Railroad offers a memorable excursion that combines natural beauty, history, comfort, and occasionally, a touch of adventure.

For Valentine's Day they host the "Chocolate Lovers’ Special" where guests can taste delicious chocolates and themed cocktails.

Arkansas

Arkansas & Missouri Railroad:The A&M's excursion trains offer a unique, scenic journey through the Ozark Boston Mountains.

Departing from historic depots in Springdale, Van Buren, or Fort Smith, Arkansas, these vintage passenger trains cross trestles and tunnels, offering passengers panoramic views of the picturesque landscape, verdant river valleys, and rugged mountain terrain.

Trained attendants provide historical commentary enhancing the trip experience.  The railroad offers a variety of themed rides, from springtime bloom specials to a popular fall foliage trip, showcasing the vibrant changing colors of the season.

The meticulously restored trains range from 1920s-era closed coach cars to 1950s climate-controlled cars, ensuring comfort while preserving a sense of historical authenticity.

On select trips, riders can enjoy an on-board meal as part of the ticket price. The Arkansas and Missouri Railroad excursions wonderfully blend history, nostalgia, and natural beauty for passengers of all ages. 

The railroad hosts the "Love Train" on February 14th between Springdale and Fayetteville.

California

Sacramento RiverTrain:  The Sacramento RiverTrain is a heritage railway that provides a unique, leisurely journey through California's picturesque countryside.

Stretching along 28 miles of the old Woodland Branch line, it travels between West Sacramento and Woodland, paralleling the meandering Sacramento River and passing rich agricultural lands and historic sites.

The railroad offers a fun, family-friendly experience with a variety of themed excursions. Popular rides include the Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre, the Old Vine Express wine tasting experience, and the Christmas-themed Magical Train.

The trains are vintage, restored models, and passengers can enjoy distractions such as strolling musicians and theatrical performances.

Several rides also include meals sourced from local farms. Whether for fun, educational outings, or romantic, evening excursions, the Sacramento RiverTrain delivers an enjoyable journey steeped in the charm and history of the region.

Their Valentine's Day special offers dinner which includes "...a welcome glass of sparkling wine, an appetizer, an entrée (choice of beef, chicken, vegetarian) with sides and a dessert."  They also offer a VIP upgrade which states:

"These folks will be seated up in our high-top car, have a bottle of upgraded Champagne table side, as well as finding a selection of chocolate dipped strawberries waiting for them at their table."

Colorado

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad:  The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge is a historic railway located in Colorado, renowned for its spectacular scenic journeys.

Operating since 1882, the train travels 45.5 miles through the San Juan National Forest, offering breathtaking views of mountains, river canyons, and remote wilderness.

The journey begins in Durango, a town rich in mining history, and concludes in the historic silver mining town of Silverton. The locomotives and vintage cars are preserved from the late 19th century, maintaining the authentic charm of the era.

The train operates year-round, with each season providing a unique experience, from snowy winter landscapes to vibrant fall colors. Special events include holiday-themed rides and photographer specials.

Committed to historical preservation and education, the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad also houses a museum in its Durango depot. This railroad offers a nostalgic trip through history and nature's beauty, providing an unforgettable adventure.

For Valentine's Day the railroad offers its "Romance On The Rails" special for those 21 years or older.  This even includes an available "Love Basket" of goodies and standard of first-class accommodations.

Royal Gorge Route Railroad: The Royal Gorge Route Railroad is a heritage railway in Canon City, Colorado, offering a unique sightseeing experience through one of the most spectacular canyons in the United States.

It operates along the former Denver and Rio Grande Western train line that winds along the Arkansas River and through the stunning Royal Gorge.

Presenting exceptional service and dining options, the two-hour journey combines extraordinary scenery with high-quality, onboard meals, prepared fresh in the train’s kitchen. Passengers can choose from various classes of service, including Vista Dome, Club and Coach.

This train ride features panoramic views of the gorge, the hanging Royal Gorge Bridge, and even opportunities to spot local wildlife. Special event excursions like Murder Mystery dinners, wine-tasting trains, and holiday-themed rides add to the appeal.

Connecticut

Essex Steam Train: The Essex Steam Train is a nostalgic journey back in time, operating out of the historic 1892 Essex Station in Connecticut. Run by the Valley Railroad Company, the steam train experience features restored vintage coaches pulled by a classic steam locomotive.

The scenic journey takes passengers through the picturesque Connecticut River Valley, known as "New England's Best Kept Secret" for its unspoiled nature, quaint towns, and vibrant wildlife.

The train also forms part of the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat experience, where passengers can combine the rail journey with a riverboat cruise. Special rides are available throughout the year, including a dinner train, a Santa Special during the holiday season, and a fall foliage run.

The Essex Steam Train represents a delightful combination of history, scenic beauty, and fun for all ages. It's a step back in time that yields an unforgettable, enjoyable experience.

Their Valentine's Day special dinner train includes an excursion lasting between 2 - 2 1/2 hours with patrons enjoying a four-course meal within their restored Pullman dining car from the 1920s.

SAM Shortline: The SAM Shortline Railroad is a delightful, heritage excursion train running through scenic southwest Georgia.

Named for Colonel Samuel Hawkins, a key local figure in railroad history, the service connects several historic towns in the state. Operated by the Southwest Georgia Railroad Excursion Authority, the train runs on picturesque tracks originally built in 1880s.

Passengers enjoy a trip through time aboard restored 1949 vintage cars, visiting charming small towns, agricultural landscapes, and historical sites along the route, including President Jimmy Carter's hometown of Plains.

Rides range from three to six hours, with riders offered the opportunity to explore the towns during layovers. Themed rides such as the Easter Bunny Express, Pilgrimage Train, and the popular Santa Claus Special add to its appeal.

The SAM Shortline Railroad offers a unique combination of history, culture, and beautiful rural scenery, providing an entertaining adventure for all ages.

Monticello Railway Museum: The Monticello Railway Museum is a fascinating, interactive transportation museum located in Monticello, Illinois.

Founded in 1966, it is dedicated to preserving, displaying, and operating historic railway equipment. Beyond static displays, the museum offers an operational railroad experience, with visitors able to ride on restored vintage passenger cars pulled by either steam or diesel-electric locomotives.

The 7-mile round trip takes riders through the beautiful Illinois countryside on railway tracks maintained by the museum itself. Collecting and restoring equipment primarily from Illinois and the Midwest, the museum boasts a diverse collection including steam engines, cabooses, passenger cars, and freight cars.

The complex encompasses a depot, active train yard, steam coaling tower, and more. Special event weekends like Railroad Days and the Polar Express are especially popular.

Run by volunteers, the Monticello Railway Museum offers a deep dive into America's railway heritage packed with family-friendly activities.

For Valentine's Day they host a Murder Mystery dinner train performed by the Urbana Champaign Theatre Company’s Seven Corpse Dinner Murder Mysteries with a four course meal prepared by Holly's Country Kitchen of Monticello.

Indiana

French Lick Scenic Railway:  The French Lick Scenic Railway is a heritage railroad based in Indiana, offering a nostalgic experience through the Hoosier National Forest.

Operated by the Indiana Railway Museum, it provides an immersive journey into history, where passengers can enjoy beautiful landscapes from restored, vintage railcars. The railway is well-known for its themed rides, including the popular Polar Express journey during the holiday season, the Wild West Hold-Ups, Dinosaur Adventure Train, and Tasting Trains for adults.

The most common excursion is a 1.5-hour trip covering 20 miles of forests, tunnels, and rolling countryside, highlighting Southern Indiana's natural beauty.

A professional crew offers interesting narration, enhancing the overall rail experience. The French Lick Scenic Railway effortlessly combines the charm of historical rail travel with fun, family-friendly entertainment, making it a premier attraction for all ages.

While the above-mentioned tasting trains - which include both chocolate and wine - are not official Valentine's Day excursions they do occur during the holiday.

Kansas

Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad: The Abilene and Smoky Valley is a remarkable heritage railroad in Abilene, Kansas. It's an essential stop for any railway enthusiast or history buff, offering a fascinating glimpse into America’s railroad history.

The organization operates over the 1887-built Rock Island Line track which was saved from demolition. The railroad provides an authentic experience, featuring a vintage diesel-electric locomotive, open-air cars, a 1946 Chicago & North Western luxury coach, and a 1902 Katy wooden passenger coach for unique dinner train experiences.

The journey offers breathtaking views of the Smoky Hill River Valley, reflecting the picturesque Kansas landscape. 

Over the years, the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad has been an active participant in preserving and presenting Kansas' rich railroad heritage to visitors.

For Valentine's Day they host a special "Valentine's Day," with food prepared by Amanda Collins of Amanda’s Bakery and Bistro in Abilene.

Kentucky

My Old Kentucky Dinner Train: The My Old Kentucky Dinner Train is a unique dining experience that provides riders with a nostalgic journey through the heart of Kentucky's landscape. Running on a restored 1940's dining car, it departs from Bardstown, the Bourbon Capital of the World, offering panoramic views of the state's beautiful countryside.

Guests enjoy a multiple-course gourmet meal during the two-and-a-half-hour train ride. The railway track is part of the original standard-gauge Kentucky Joint Line that carried bourbon to Louisville and then across the nation.

Given its heritage connection, bourbon is also a signature element of the dining experience, with a number of dishes incorporating the spirit.

The train operates year-round, regardless of weather, with special themed experiences offered occasionally, such as murder mystery rides and holiday celebrations. Overall, My Old Kentucky Dinner Train combines fine dining, vintage luxury, and a historic journey, culminating in an unforgettable experience.

Western Maryland Scenic Railroad:  The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, based in Cumberland, Maryland, offers a riveting journey through history. Established in 1981, it provides an engaging excursion into the past, highlighting the golden age of American railroading.

The Scenic Railroad features an authentic 2-6-6-2 Mallet steam locomotive, #1309, and vintage diesels which pull passenger cars on a spectacular round trip through the beautiful Allegheny Mountains.

Riders are treated to breathtaking views of the sweeping landscapes, local wildlife, and iconic landmarks including the Helmstetter’s Horseshoe Curve. Trips often include an extended layover in Frostburg, where passengers can explore the historic town and its attractions.

The railroad also offers special themed rides such as murder mysteries and holiday celebrations, adding to the unique experience. A highlight of the journey is the chance to witness the locomotive being turned on a turntable in traditional fashion.

For Valentine's Day they host their "Romance On The Rails" dinner train.  The 3-hour excursion is for ages 21 years+ and includes a 3-course meal.

It operates from late spring through fall, displaying unparalleled views of the scenic landscapes of Cape Cod, including the tranquil salt marshes, cranberry bogs, and beautiful woodlands. The highlight of the journey includes the stunning views over the Cape Cod Canal.

Beyond the beautiful scenic rides, the railroad offers distinctive dining train services including elegant gourmet dinners, lively brunches, and family-friendly luncheons. These journeys blend picturesque views with fine dining inside fully restored vintage dining cars, making a memorable experience for visitors.

Virginia and Truckee Railroad: The Virginia and Truckee, also known as the "Queen of the Short Lines," is a richly historic railroad located in Virginia City, Nevada.

Their scenic routes offer a unique experience, transporting passengers through the desert landscapes and hills of Nevada's past, while providing informative narratives about the history of the Comstock Lode, a major silver deposit discovered in the 19th century.

The V&T offers several special excursions such as the Father's Day Train, 4th of July Trains, and Halloween Trains. The railroad's most popular excursion, 'THE POLAR EXPRESS ™ Train Ride', features a magical journey to the North Pole filled with hot cocoa, cookies and carols.

Equipped with vintage steam and diesel locomotives, along with restored Virginia & Truckee passenger coaches, a trip aboard the V&T is like stepping back in time to the era of the American Old West.

The train rides offer an enchanting view of the scenic terrain of southern New Jersey, traversing salt marshes, lush woodlands, and vibrant local communities. In addition to the scenic excursions, they offer special event rides like the Santa Express trains during the holiday season.

Their fleet comprises beautifully restored diesel locomotives and vintage coaches, recalling an earlier era of train travel.

The Cape May Seashore Lines brilliantly combines the allure of classic railroad with the beauty of Jersey Cape, offering a unique and delightful experience for rail enthusiasts, history buffs, and families seeking an unusual and memorable outing.

For Valentine's Day they offer a special trip - for adults only - lasting a little over an hour which includes "...a selection of first class hors d'oeuvres (hot and cold), desserts and refreshments!"

New York

Adirondack Railroad:  The Adirondack Railroad is a historic railway located in Upstate New York, offering scenic trips through the magnificent Adirondack Mountains.

The railroad operates over a track originally built in the 19th century for the New York Central Railroad. It provides a variety of themed train rides that change seasonally, including fall foliage tours, beer and wine tasting trains, and the very popular Polar Express during Christmas season.

With both open-air and enclosed cars available, passengers can appreciate the region’s beautiful landscapes teeming with wildlife. The railroad’s most well-known route runs between Utica and the resort village of Thendara, near Old Forge.

It also runs occasional trips further north to Saranac Lake and Lake Placid. The Adirondack Railroad perfectly combines history, picturesque scenery, and entertaining events, ensuring a memorable journey for passengers of all ages.

For Valentine's Day the railroad offers a 3-hour round trip - either in first or diamond class acommodations - from Utica’s Union Station to Remsen with an onboard meal prepared by local chef Patrick O’Connor, owner of Feast & Festivities by O’Connor’s.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad: The CVSR is a unique tourist attraction located within the picturesque Cuyahoga Valley National Park in North-East Ohio. Hocking Valley Scenic Railway:  The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway is a historic railroad offering scenic train rides, situated in Nelsonville, Ohio. Operating on tracks laid in the late 19th century, this non-profit railway is dedicated to preserving, restoring, and sharing the classic era of the American railroad.

The train rides provide beautiful views of the Hocking River and the surrounding rolling hills, farmlands, and forests. Passengers can choose from a variety of trips, including regular weekend rides, special seasonal events like the Fall Foliage Tours, Santa Trains, or themed experiences such as the Robbery Train.

The railway features vintage, restored train cars, allowing visitors a taste of the past. Volunteers operate all aspects of the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway operations, from selling tickets to maintaining the track and locomotives. Overall, it offers an engaging historical and educational experience, combined with natural beauty.

The HVSR hosts a Valentine's Day dinner train which includes a 3-hour round trip during which time Chef Alfonso Contrisciani will prepare a four-course dinner in-route that is served throughout the trip.

They host a special Valentine's Day excursion on Wednesday, February 14, 2024 at 6 pm.: 

New Hope Railroad:  The New Hope Railroad, nestled in historic Bucks County, Pennsylvania, offers a captivatingly nostalgic ride through serene landscapes.

Known for its meticulously restored vintage steam and diesel locomotives, the railroad winds through woodlands, farms, and creek crossings over an 8.6-mile round trip.

Traditional excursion trips provide a leisurely immersive experience while special event rides such as Easter Bunny Express, the Autumn Leaf Special, and the North Pole Express add festive charm.

Distinctive features of the railroad include the option to enjoy a traditional rail dining experience aboard fully restored early 20th century dining cars, or to choose the luxurious First Class Parlor Car for extraordinary comfort and complimentary beverages.

The New Hope Railroad provides a taste of bygone travel elegance, making it a must-visit attraction for history enthusiasts, rail lovers, and families.

These scenic rides take passengers through the rolling hills and beautiful countryside of middle Tennessee, often with themes like Civil War journeys, Thomas the Train for kids, romantic dinner trains, and holiday specials.

The museum also offers the unique opportunity for visitors to ride in the cab with the engineer. The Tennessee Central Railway Museum provides an enriching blend of history, education and adventure, making it a must-visit for train enthusiasts and families.

For Valentine's Day they host two events; the Valenshine Moonshine Express (3 hours) on February 10th and the Valentines Wine Train (6 hours) on February 17th.

Tennessee Valley Railroad:  The Tennessee Valley Railroad (TVR) is a moving museum and nonprofit educational corporation that aims to preserve and share the history and technology of rail travel.

Founded in 1960, it operates both freight and passenger trains, becoming an important historic and tourist attraction in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The TVR offers various traditional rail journeys featuring vintage, restored locomotives.

These include the scenic Missionary Ridge Local trip, longer rides like the Summerville Steam Special, and seasonal specials such as the North Pole Limited and Dinner on the Diner. Besides rides, TVR is also home to a specialized repair shop for maintaining and restoring vintage railway equipment.

Interactive exhibits and experienced guides further enhance visitors' historical understanding and appreciation. TVR's dedication to preserving railroad history provides a fun and educational experience for all ages.

The organization hosts a special Valentine's Day dinner train stating:

"The trip includes a four-course dining experience on board a restored 1924 dining car. Trains depart from Chattanooga’s Grand Junction Station, traveling at a leisurely pace through portions of urban East Chattanooga before reversing direction and returning to Grand Junction. The travel time is just right for a complete meal on a vintage dining car."

Grapevine Vintage Railroad:  The Grapevine Vintage Railroad is a charming heritage railroad located in Grapevine, Texas. Featuring beautifully restored Victorian-era coaches, the railroad offers excursions along the historic Cotton Belt Route between Grapevine and the Fort Worth Stockyards.

The trains are led by either "Puffy" the 1896 steam locomotive, or "Vinny," a 1953 GP-7 diesel locomotive, both impressively restored and maintained.

The railroad provides a captivating journey through the North Texas countryside, offering a glimpse of the bygone era of American railroading.

Along with regular excursions, the Grapevine Vintage Railroad also offers special event rides such as the Jazz Wine Train, the North Pole Express during the holiday season, and the popular Trick 'r Treat Trains for Halloween.

The Grapevine Vintage Railroad is a timeless adventure for families, history buffs, and rail enthusiasts, providing a memorable experience that combines history, scenic beauty, and traditional charm.

For Valentine's Day they host a Sweetheart Wine Train for adults; the trip lasts about 2.5 hours.
