Reading 4-8-4 2100 To Be Under Steam This June
Historic Reading 4-8-4 No. 2100 Returns to Steam as American Freedom Train No. 250 at Cleveland Railroad Festival This June
Published: May 8, 2026
By: Adam Burns
Cleveland, Ohio — After more than a decade of intensive restoration by the American Steam Railroad Preservation Association (ASR), the legendary Reading Company 4-8-4 Northern-type steam locomotive No. 2100 will make its long-awaited public return to steam this summer — repainted and renumbered as American Freedom Train No. 250 in a striking red, white, and blue patriotic livery.
The ASR announced on May 1, 2026, that the locomotive will headline the inaugural Cleveland Railroad Festival on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event is a collaboration with the Midwest Railway Preservation Society (MRPS) and Cleveland History Days, set against the historic backdrop of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad roundhouse in Cleveland’s industrial flats — a facility that has been in continuous operation since 1907.
“This is the first time in nearly 20 years that locomotive No. 250 will be fired up for a public event,” said ASR Social Media Chairperson Nick Martin. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to collaborate with MRPS and CHD to steam up this patriotic engine for the public this summer, showcasing what the last 11 years of generous support have made possible.
”Midwest Railway Preservation Society Secretary Ken Yandek added: “Midwest Railway is excited to collaborate with American Steam Railroad in conjunction with the Annual Cleveland History Days celebration to showcase a live steam locomotive against the historic backdrop of the B&O roundhouse in Cleveland's industrial flats.”
What to Expect at the Cleveland Railroad Festival
Attendees will have the rare opportunity to see the massive 4-8-4 under live steam and on public display. Highlights include:
- Cab tours and whistle demonstrations (available for an additional charge).
- Guided tours of the historic B&O roundhouse.
- Additional railroad-themed activities and exhibits (more details to be announced in the coming weeks via ASR’s website and social media).
Tickets are priced at $25 for ages 13 and up, $10 for children ages 5–12, and free for children 4 and under. Proceeds will benefit both ASR and MRPS. Tickets will be available online and at the door through the ASR’s visit/events page.Organizers note that, due to the ongoing restoration, the locomotive’s operating status could change without notice.
A Storied Locomotive with a Patriotic New Chapter
Reading No. 2100 was built in September 1945 in the Reading Company’s own shops in Reading, Pennsylvania, as the prototype of the railroad’s T-1 class 4-8-4 “Northern” locomotives. Weighing roughly 400 tons and designed for fast freight service, it represented the pinnacle of mid-20th-century American steam technology. After nearly a decade in heavy service, the locomotive was retired but later saw brief revivals in the 1980s and early 2000s before entering a new chapter with ASR.
In 2015, the American Steam Railroad Preservation Association — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2005 by engineers, businessmen, and railroaders — surprised the preservation community by securing a multi-year lease on No. 2100 and transporting it more than 2,200 miles to its current home in Cleveland. Since then, volunteers have logged over 26,000 hours restoring the giant to operating condition, one of the most ambitious steam projects in the United States in recent decades.
The locomotive recently passed a key Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)-witnessed hydrostatic and steam test in February 2026, marking a major milestone on the road back to the rails.
When it debuts in June, No. 2100 will wear the iconic red, white, and blue colors of the original American Freedom Train, renumbered as No. 250 to commemorate 250 years of American independence. The transformation honors the locomotive’s new role as a rolling symbol of national heritage and railroad preservation.
Economic and Cultural Impact
Rail tourism consultants estimate that ASR’s steam operations could draw 15,000 to 25,000 visitors annually to Greater Cleveland and other destinations, injecting between $2.25 million and $3.75 million into the local economy each year through tourism, hospitality, and related spending.
The Cleveland Railroad Festival represents the public debut of this ambitious program — a celebration of living history, engineering achievement, and community partnership.
How to Support the Restoration
The work is not finished. ASR continues to raise funds for final running-gear components and ongoing maintenance. Tax-deductible donations can be mailed to:
American Steam Railroad Preservation Association
2800 W. 3rd St.
Cleveland, OH 44113
Or contributed online at www.americansteamrailroad.org/donate.
Additional events and activities surrounding No. 250’s debut will be announced soon. For the latest updates, visit the American Steam Railroad website or follow them on social media.
This June, Cleveland will once again echo with the whistle and thunder of a true American steam icon — now carrying the spirit of the Freedom Train into its next 80 years of service. Mark your calendars for June 27 and be part of railroad history in the making.
