A Brief History

Early Beginnings

The Stourbridge Line’s history dates back to the early 19th century and is rooted in the rich industrial heritage of the region.

The original Honesdale to Lackawaxen line was part of the Delaware & Hudson Canal Company's gravity railroad, constructed to transport coal from the mines of Pennsylvania to markets in New York.

The line formally opened in 1829, marking a significant development in American railroading history. This line is notably tied to the Stourbridge Lion, one of America's first locomotives, which ran in 1829 and became an iconic part of rail history.

Evolution and Decline

The track in front of the railroad's Visitor’s Center, where trains are boarded, is part of the original D&H Honesdale Branch. It served as the Canal Basin for the D&H Canal Company, a vital hub where boats were loaded with coal for their 108-mile journey to Kingston, New York.

Over the 20th century, this track experienced several transitions. Initially owned by the Erie Railroad, it later became part of the Erie Lackawanna following their merger in the 1960s.

Subsequent ownership included LASB, Stourbridge Railroad, and M&E. Today, it proudly operates under the Delaware, Lackawaxen, and Stourbridge Railroad.
