Experience the magic of the holiday season aboard The Polar Express in Washington. Currently, only the Chehalis-Centralia Railroad & Museum host these official events in the state.
This festive journey, inspired by Chris Van Allsburg's beloved book "The Polar Express" and the subsequent popular movie adaptation, offers a unique holiday adventure for families and rail enthusiasts alike. This guide will help you navigate the experience, from planning your trip to what you can expect aboard the train.
Boarding Process
Arrive early to ensure a smooth boarding process. Stations often have special events or displays leading up to departure, enhancing the pre-boarding experience. Make sure to check the weather in advance and dress accordingly.
Dress Code: Pajamas Encouraged!
One of the whimsical traditions of the Polar Express rides is wearing pajamas, just like the children in the story. Families are encouraged to don matching sets and fully embrace the spirit of the journey. Don’t forget to bring warm layers if you plan to explore outside after the ride, as Washington's winter weather can be quite chilly.
On-Board Activities
Once aboard, get ready for a plethora of activities designed to create an unforgettable experience:
Read-Aloud Sessions: The story of "The Polar Express" is narrated as the train makes its way to the “North Pole.” Passengers can follow along in their own copies or simply listen to the enchanting tale.
Hot Chocolate and Treats: Just like in the story, passengers are served warm hot chocolate and cookies by dancing chefs. This indulgence is a highlight for many families.
Santa Claus Visit: As the train reaches the North Pole, Santa boards the train to greet each child and distribute a special gift, usually a sleigh bell, echoing a pivotal moment in the story.
Themed Decor and Ambiance
The train itself is adorned with festive decorations, from twinkling lights to sparkling tinsel, immersing passengers in the holiday spirit. Themed music plays throughout the journey, further enhancing the enchanting atmosphere that aligns beautifully with the narrative of the Polar Express story.
Engage with the Story: Familiarize yourself and your children with "The Polar Express" book and movie before the trip to maximize the experience.
Capture the Memories: Bring your camera or smartphone to document the ride. Many railroads allow passengers ample time to snap photos with Santa and the beautifully decorated train.
Participate in On-Board Activities: Encourage kids to participate in singing, dancing, and engaging with the characters to make the most out of the adventure.
Chehalis-Centralia Railroad & Museum: For those who want to see a steam locomotive in action within the Pacific Northwest a visit to Chehalis is a must.
The Chehalis-Centralia Railroad & Museum operates the following locomotive:
Two others under are restoration:
To host excursions they utilize a 10-mile section of the old Milwaukee Road (which left the west coast in 1980), currently owned by the Port of Chehalis (and used for freight service by Tacoma Rail); founded in 1986, public outings began three years later.
The museum is primarily dedicated to the region's logging history with several pieces focused on that subject. In addition, they host an array of various train rides for the public including dinner trains, regular excursions, and specials for virtually every holiday.
These trips are quite popular, even more so thanks to the use of steam locomotives which draws even larger crowds. One of their special events is hosting official The Polar Express events during late November through December.
Please note that they also offer Santa Steam Trains not related to The Polar Express during select dates in December.
A Polar Express train ride is more than just a train trip; it’s an immersive experience that celebrates the magic of the holiday season. From stunning landscapes to beloved traditions, it’s a journey that delights passengers of all ages.
Planning ahead and embracing the festive spirit will ensure that your adventure aboard the Polar Express is as magical as the story itself. Whether you’re starting a new family tradition or revisiting a cherished memory, The Polar Express offers a holiday experience like no other.
