Texas Central Railway: Status, Background, Overview

High-speed rail (HSR) has long been the hallmark of European and Asian countries - notably France, Germany, and Japan - offering swift and efficient transport options across vast distances.
The Texas Central Railway project, often referred to as the Texas high-speed rail, is an ambitious endeavor aimed at bringing HSR to the United States in a significant way.
Efforts to construct this HSR corridor originally began in 2009 with the founding of Lone Star High-Speed Rail LLC. Its name was later changed to Texas Central Railway in 2012.
With a focus on connecting major urban centers and easing transportation woes, the Texas Central is poised to transform travel between Dallas and Houston, two of Texas's largest and most economically vibrant cities.
Unfortunately, funding for this project, as with others, remains elusive. It was expected to begin construction in 2021 and open for service by 2026. However, work on the corridor has never began as of this writing.
Background
The Texas Central project traces its origins to the persistent transportation challenges in the Lone Star State. Texas is not only one of the largest states in the U.S. but also one of the fastest-growing, with significant population inflows and economic development. The I-45 corridor, running between Dallas and Houston, serves as a critical artery but is frequently congested, leading to extended travel times and safety concerns.
Understanding these challenges, Texas Central, a private company, proposed the high-speed rail project, inspired by Japan's Tokaido Shinkansen system. This project aims to link the 240-mile distance between Dallas and Houston in under 90 minutes - with trains reaching speeds of between 186–205 mph (300–330 km/h) along the double-tracked corridor - a significant improvement over the current travel time by car, which can range from four to five hours under normal conditions.
