Overview

History and Purpose

Launched on September 18, 2000, the Sounder commuter rail service was developed by Sound Transit to provide a reliable and efficient mode of transportation for the growing population in the Puget Sound region. The goal was to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce travel times, and offer an environmentally friendly alternative to driving.

The Routes

Sounder operates two primary routes totaling 82 miles: originally known as the North Line and the South Line these corridors are now referred to as the 'N' Line and 'S' Line respectively.  In addition, Sound Transit owns the track between Tacoma and Nisqually, a 21-mile corridor.

1. **'N' Line (Everett-Seattle)**: This line runs from Everett to Seattle, passing through key stops such as Mukilteo and Edmonds. The route covers approximately 35 miles and offers picturesque views of the Puget Sound and surrounding landscapes.

2. **'S' Line (Seattle-Lakewood)**: The 'S' Line runs from Seattle to Lakewood (opening to this community in October, 2012), passing through major stops including Tukwila, Kent, Auburn, Sumner, Puyallup, and Tacoma Dome. This line spans about 47 miles and serves several densely populated communities.

Schedule and Frequency

Sounder operates primarily during weekdays, focusing on peak hours to accommodate commuters. Limited service is available on weekends and during special events, such as major sports games. For the most up-to-date schedule, visit the Sound Transit website or use the Sound Transit mobile app.

Planning Your Trip

Ticket Options

Sounder offers a variety of ticket options to suit different travel needs:

1. **One-Way and Round-Trip Tickets**: Ideal for occasional travelers.

2. **Day Passes**: Providing unlimited travel for a single day, perfect for tourists and sightseers.

3. **Monthly Passes**: Designed for regular commuters, offering unlimited travel for a month.

4. **ORCA Card**: A regional smart card that provides convenient, contactless payment for Sounder, as well as other local transit systems like buses, light rail, ferries, and streetcars.

Purchasing Tickets

Tickets can be purchased through several convenient methods:

1. **ORCA Card**: Load funds onto your ORCA Card online, at vending machines, or in person at authorized retailers. Tap your card on the readers at the station before boarding.

2. **Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs)**: Available at all Sounder stations, accepting cash, credit, and debit cards.

3. **Sound Transit Mobile App**: Buy and use digital tickets directly from your smartphone.

4. **Online**: Purchase tickets via the Sound Transit website and print them at home.

Fares and Discounts

Sounder operates a zone-based fare system, with pricing dependent on the number of zones traveled. Discounts are available for:

1. **Seniors (65+)**: Reduced fares for senior citizens.

2. **Youth (18 and under)**: Ride free of charge.

3. **Persons with Disabilities**: Reduced fares for eligible passengers with disabilities.

4. **Low-Income Riders**: ORCA LIFT program offers reduced fares for low-income riders who meet eligibility requirements.

Fare Zones

Fares are calculated based on the number of zones traveled. The Sounder service area is divided into several zones, with each zone representing a segment of the route. Traveling through more zones increases the fare. Refer to the Sound Transit website for a detailed fare chart and zone map.

At The Station

Arrival and Boarding

Plan to arrive at your station at least 15-30 minutes before your train's scheduled departure. This allows time for purchasing tickets, finding the correct platform, and boarding.

Digital displays and audio announcements provide information about train arrivals, departures, and any service changes. Be sure to check the platform number and board the correct train.

Parking and Accessibility

Many Sounder stations offer parking facilities, with spaces available on a first-come, first-served basis. Some stations also offer paid parking for extended stays. Stations are equipped with facilities to accommodate passengers with disabilities, including ramps, elevators, and accessible restrooms.

Bicycles and Luggage

Sounder is bicycle-friendly, with designated bike racks available on each train. Passengers are encouraged to bring only what they can carry, storing personal items in overhead racks or under seats. Bikes should be secured in the designated areas to ensure safety and accessibility for all passengers.
