Among the myriad services offered by Amtrak, the Reno Fun Train stood out as a unique and nostalgic travel experience that harkens back to the golden age of American railroads.

This seasonal train service combined breathtaking scenic views, lively entertainment, and a festive atmosphere, making the journey to Reno, Nevada, just as exhilarating as the destination itself.

The train began under Southern Pacific during the 1960s and was continued through the Amtrak era.  By the mid-2010s patronage was waning.

Then-operator Key Holidays cancelled the train in late 2017 following mudslides and did not renew the trips in 2018.  New operator Train Travel, Inc. stated the train would resume in 2019 but ultimately never did so. This article delves into the history, features, and enduring charm of the Reno Fun Train.

Historical Background

The Reno Fun Train traces its origins back to the late 1960s, a tumultuous time for American rail travel. As passenger rail services struggled to compete with the burgeoning airline and automobile industries, creative solutions were sought to revive public interest in train travel.

The concept of a themed excursion train took hold, and thus, the Reno Fun Train was born.  Initially operated by Southern Pacific, the inaugural Reno Fun Train made its debut in 1963.

The service was designed to offer a vibrant and entertaining journey from the San Francisco Bay Area to Reno, often referred to as "The Biggest Little City in the World."

With the formation of Amtrak in 1971, the Reno Fun Train became a part of the national rail network, continuing to enchant passengers with its unique blend of scenery and entertainment.

The Route: From Bay Area to Reno

The journey on the Fun Train began at the Jack London Square station in Oakland, California. From there, the train made its way through the heart of the Sierra Nevada, passing through picturesque landscapes and historic towns.

As passengers traversed the Donner Pass, they were treated to stunning views of snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, and crystal-clear lakes.

The train's route covered approximately 200 miles, winding through the cities of Emeryville, Richmond, Martinez, and Sacramento before climbing into the Sierra Nevada.

Key highlights of the journey included crossing the iconic Carquinez Strait, traveling along the American River, and navigating the historic Donner Pass, known for its challenging terrain and rich history.

A Festive Atmosphere Onboard

What truly sat the Reno Fun Train apart was its lively and festive onboard atmosphere. Unlike conventional train services, the Fun Train placed a strong emphasis on entertainment and social interaction. Passengers were encouraged to leave their worries behind and immerse themselves in the joyous spirit of the journey.

Entertainment and Activities

From the moment passengers stepped aboard, they were greeted by a variety of entertainment options. The train featured live music performances, dance cars, and themed parties, ensuring there is never a dull moment.

Each car was carefully curated to offer a different experience, from upbeat dance floors to cozy lounges where passengers could relax and enjoy the passing scenery.

Live bands and DJs kept the energy high, playing a mix of classic hits and contemporary tunes. Passengers were often found dancing in the aisles, socializing with fellow travelers, and participating in themed costume contests.

The onboard entertainment was complemented by cheerful and attentive staff members who ensured that every passenger has a memorable experience.

The menu featured a variety of options, from hearty breakfasts to gourmet dinners, catering to different tastes and dietary preferences.

For those looking to unwind with a drink, the train offered multiple bar cars where passengers can enjoy a wide selection of beverages.

From craft beers and fine wines to specially crafted cocktails, the bar cars provided the perfect setting for socializing and toasting to new friendships.

Scenic Viewing

Amtrak's Reno Fun Train ensured that passengers have ample opportunities to appreciate the breathtaking scenery along the route. The train was equipped with observation cars that feature large windows, offering panoramic views of the landscapes.

These cars were particularly popular during the journey through the Sierra Nevada, where passengers could marvel at the rugged beauty of the mountains and the pristine wilderness.

Destination: The Biggest Little City in the World

The Fun Train's final destination was Reno, Nevada, a city known for its vibrant nightlife, casinos, and entertainment options. Upon arrival, passengers were transported to a world of excitement and possibilities. Reno offers a diverse array of attractions, from gaming and live shows to outdoor adventures and cultural experiences.
