State Rail History

Railroading in New York reaches back to the industry’s birth. The Mohawk & Hudson was incorporated April 17, 1826, and opened August 9, 1831, linking Albany on the Hudson with Schenectady on the Mohawk—a 16-mile shortcut against the Erie Canal that later folded into the New York Central (Mike Schafer and Brian Solomon, New York Central Railroad).

The New York & Erie, chartered April 24, 1832, drove a 447-mile main from Piermont on the Hudson to Dunkirk on Lake Erie, opened in full by spring 1851. Buffalo and Rochester branches followed; repeated bankruptcies and reorganizations produced the Erie Railway of 1861 and, eventually, the Erie Lackawanna of 1960. Competing paths to Buffalo and the Midwest drew the Central, Lackawanna, Lehigh Valley, NYO&W, and others into a dense, competitive map.

By 1920 New York held about 8,390 route miles (John F. Stover). Today roughly 3,378 remain in freight service. Tourist railroads and museums interpret what the map lost—and what still moves through the Empire State.

Adirondack Railroad

Formerly the Adirondack Scenic Railroad (launched 1992), the Adirondack Railroad operates unconnected segments of the old New York Central Adirondack Division toward Lake Placid—classically a short Saranac Lake–Lake Placid product and a longer Utica–Thendara run. Wilderness scenery and multi-hour days put it among New York’s highest-demand rides; fall color and holiday specials sell early.

Arcade & Attica Railroad

Based in Arcade, this short line runs freight and steam-era passenger specials on former Buffalo, Attica & Arcade trackage. Operating season typically late May through December, with cider/doughnut and foliage weekends popular with families and railfans.

Buffalo, Cattaraugus & Jamestown Scenic Railway

Western New York’s busy themed-excursion railroad boards at Hamburg (4 Scott Street area) and markets diesel scenic trips with a full special-events slate: murder mystery (with and without dinner), Rails & Ales, wine tasting, fall foliage, Halloween, Santa Express, bluegrass, and longer railfan runs toward Buffalo / North Collins. Based in Gowanda, the NY&LE is a classic Western New York country scenic railroad—roughly two-hour class round trips through hills and farmland, with fall foliage, BBQ layover, and winter specials on the public calendar. Catskill Mountain Railroad

From the Kingston area on Ulster & Delaware / NYC heritage trackage, CMRR markets family scenic rides through the Catskills and has reported strong annual ridership. Pumpkin Express and foliage products dominate autumn demand.
