Mother's Day is a cherished occasion to honor and celebrate the beloved mothers in our lives. While traditional gifts like flowers and brunches are always appreciated, why not add a unique twist this year by embarking on a scenic train ride?
Michigan, with its lush landscapes and rich railroad history, is home to several locations hosting public excursions, such as the steam-powered Huckleberry Railroad and Little River Railroad.
Currently, only organization offers a Mother’s Day-themed train, the Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso - home to Pere Marquette 2-8-4 #1225 which starred in the hit movie "The Polar Express."
A Mother’s Day Ride with Pere Marquette #1225
The Steam Railroading Institute (SRI) in Owosso operates the famous North Pole Express, and while it's typically a winter attraction, special Mother’s Day rides are featured in the warmer months. The locomotive behind The Polar Express movie, Pere Marquette 1225, takes front stage.

For Mother's Day, the SRI hosts the Mother's Day Tea Train where moms can sample a variety of teas with light refreshments from local establishments while enjoying a steam-powered train ride.
About The Institute
Nestled in Owosso, the SRI stands as a unique testament to the history and mechanics of steam locomotives. It offers enthusiasts and tourists an immersive experience, combining historical education with the thrill of steam-powered travel.
The Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, restoration, and operation of steam locomotives. It is home to the famous Pere Marquette #1225. Visitors can explore the impressive grounds, which house a collection of railroad artifacts, exhibits, and of course, the locomotives themselves.

Pere Marquette 1225
The star attraction is undoubtedly this locomotive. Built in 1941, the massive 2-8-4 is a marvel of engineering. Visitors can learn about the intricate processes involved in its maintenance and the physics that allow it to function.
During its heyday the big engine, among 39 the railroad purchased between 1937-1944 from the Lima Locomotive Works (#1201-1239), to haul fast freights between Detroit, Saginaw, Grand Rapids and Chicago. During this time the 2-8-4s established an incredible record of speed and efficiency, typical of this wheel arrangement.
The Institute offers seasonal train excursions, allowing guests to experience the magic of a ride pulled by a historic steam engine.

The Institute’s museum space is filled with exhibits that detail the history of railroading in America. Interactive displays offer insights into the operation and maintenance of steam locomotives.
