Lorain and West Virginia Railway: A Visitor's Guide

Published: July 27, 2024

By: Adam Burns

All aboard the Lorain & West Virginia Railway, your gateway to yesteryear nestled in the beautiful landscapes of Lorain County, Ohio! This isn't just any railroad—it's a living, breathing piece of history, lovingly preserved and operated by the passionate volunteers of the Lake Shore Railway Association, a dedicated 501(c)3 nonprofit.

Originally built to power the robust industries of Lorain, the railway has transitioned from hauling heavy freight to offering delightful seasonal train rides. When you step aboard our meticulously restored 1950s-era equipment, you'll be transported back to a time when rail travel was the epitome of elegance and comfort.

Our journey began in 1979 when the Lake Shore Railway Association was founded with a mission close to the heart: to save the Lorain & West Virginia Railway from the brink of abandonment.

Over the decades, the organization has managed to acquire nearly 20 of the original 25 miles of this historic line. After years of relentless effort and dedication, operations were first restored in 1993.  Today, about 6 miles of the southern end is now opened for service.

Starting from the depot in Wellington, Ohio, the trains - led by former Chicago & North Western E8A #5021-B painted in a custom red/maroon and white livery - meander through the picturesque rural areas of southern Lorain County. It's a leisurely ride that invites you to sit back, relax, and soak in the scenery, all while experiencing a piece of history in motion.

Whether you're a history buff, a train enthusiast, or just looking for a unique outing, the L&WV promises an experience that's as educational as it is enchanting. Step aboard and let us take you on a ride through the past and into the heart of rural Ohio.

History

The original Lorain and West Virginia Railway was conceived by Joseph Ramsey of the Wabash to connect the Wheeling and Lake Erie (W&LE) at Wellington, Ohio, with the burgeoning industries at Lorain, located on the shores of Lake Erie.

Ramsey was ultimately replaced on the project before construction began. Undeterred, he went on to plan and construct another line between Wellington and Lorain—the Lorain Ashland and Southern. However, it was the Lorain and West Virginia Railway (L&WV), Ramsey's first effort, that outlasted its competitors.

The L&WV began service in 1906, starting from a wye on the W&LE tracks in Wellington. Heading north, it skirted the western boundary of Oberlin before veering northeast across southern Lorain, ultimately reaching its terminus in the Sheffield Lake area. Its primary freight comprised coal shipments to Lorain and Oberlin, as well as steel shipments from Lorain’s bustling industrial facilities.

Despite its initial success, the railway faced numerous challenges. The W&LE was leased by the Nickel Plate Road on December 1, 1949, which led to a noticeable decline in traffic.

This decline steepened following the Norfolk & Western's acquisition of the Nickel Plate in 1964, reducing the railway to a mere connector with limited clientele.

The final blow came from a devastating flood in 1969, which washed out a critical bridge near Wellington, leading to the cessation of all operations. By 1979, the tracks had been formally abandoned, remaining unused for decades.

With the rails still in place, local preservation groups valiantly fought to keep the line intact. Their efforts have borne fruit in the form of a well-maintained section totaling 6 miles near Wellington.

This town currently houses an impressive collection of vintage rolling stock, including a well-maintained E8A of C&NW heritage, preserving the historical essence of this once vital transportation artery.

Today, the Lorain and West Virginia Railway invites enthusiasts and visitors to relive a bygone era of American railroading, celebrating the enduring legacy of Joseph Ramsey’s visionary enterprise.
