Polar Express train rides have become beloved holiday traditions for many families, drawing inspiration from the beloved children’s book "The Polar Express" by Chris Van Allsburg and its subsequent movie adaptation.

These magical journeys allow children and adults alike to step into the enchanting story of a young boy’s Christmas Eve journey to the North Pole. While the entire United States is dotted with various Polar Express experiences, this guide will delve into what you can expect from the Polar Express in Louisiana, hosted from the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal.

Introduction to The Polar Express Experience

These train rides are designed to bring the story of The Polar Express to life for attendees. The voyage typically involves a theatrical retelling of the story, complete with actors portraying characters like the Conductor and Santa Claus. Passengers can enjoy beautiful views, seasonal decorations, and themed refreshments while they are whisked away into a winter wonderland.

What to Expect During the Ride

- Duration: Rides typically last about one to one and a half hours, making them perfect for younger children with shorter attention spans.

Onboard Experience

- Hot Chocolate and Cookies: Just like in the book, passengers are treated to delicious hot chocolate and cookies served by cheerful staff dressed as chefs.

- Storytelling & Music: "The Polar Express" storybook is read aloud, complete with musical accompaniment and aboard staff reenacting scenes from the story.

- Themed Decor and Costumes: The train is adorned in festive decorations, and crew members are dressed in costumes to enhance the magical ambiance.

Meeting Santa Claus

One of the most anticipated moments is when Santa Claus boards the train. Each child receives a special souvenir – typically a silver sleigh bell, reminiscent of the story's ending. The moment is orchestrated to be memorable, with plenty of photo opportunities for families.

Dress Code and Packing

Passengers are encouraged to wear pajamas to emulate the story's characters, adding to the communal fun and spirit of the adventure. However, since evenings can be chilly, it's wise to layer up and ensure comfort for the duration of the trip. Don't forget your cameras to capture those legendary holiday memories!

New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal

This historic passenger station is one of three locations where Amtrak hosts official The Polar Express train rides.

The immense success and critical acclaim of Warner Brothers' 2004 film spun-off an unexpected new market, excursion trains masquerading as "The Polar Express."

It began as an impromptu experiment by a handful of organizations and became so popular Warner Brothers now requires licensing fees through Rail Events, Inc. for any railroad/museum wishing to host the event.

As it continues to grow the production has branched out to major Amtrak terminals, such as New Orleans, and will likely continue to expand in the coming years.

New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal was one of the last great facilities opened in America when completed in 1954.  It was designed by architects Wogan & Bernard, Jules K. de la Vergne, and August Perez & Associates in 1949 as actual construction took three years.

NOUPT replaced New Orleans Union Station (built in 1892, demolished in 1954) and served all of the major railroads serving the city including Illinois Central, Southern Railway, Southern Pacific, Kansas City Southern, and Louisville & Nashville.
