What to Expect on a Pumpkin Train

What makes pumpkin trains particularly magical is the combination of sights, sounds, and seasonal fun. Typically, passengers board vintage or creatively themed train cars for journeys through picturesque landscapes.

Trips are often narrated, providing insights into regional history and the rail line itself. Destinations usually feature a local farm or pumpkin patch, where guests can disembark to enjoy activities such as:

- Pumpkin picking
- Hayrides
- Corn mazes
- Petting zoos
- Seasonal refreshments (think apple cider and pumpkin pie)
- Craft booths and local produce markets

These trips often culminate in a photo opportunity with the scenic backdrop of the pumpkin patch or farm.

Whitewater Valley Railroad - The Pumpkinliner

Nestled in the picturesque Whitewater Valley, this historic railroad offers The Pumpkinliner, a beloved autumn attraction. Passengers enjoy a scenic ride to a local pumpkin patch where they can wander and choose their perfect pumpkins. The round-trip journey departs from the Connersville  Grand Central Station and travels to the local pumpkin patch where the kids can pick out their favorite gourd.

Highlights:

- Intimate setting with historic rolling stock
- Availability of snacks and refreshments on board
- Nearby attractions include Metamora’s historic canal and grist mill

More About The Railroad

Established in 1974, the railroad operates over a historic route originally constructed by the original White Water Valley Railroad in the 1860s, which once facilitated the transportation of agricultural products, lumber, and other goods in the region.  It later became part of the New York Central System.

Spanning approximately 19 miles, the rail line runs alongside the beautiful Whitewater River Gorge, connecting Connersville to the charming town of Metamora, known for its historic canal town attractions.

The railroad provides a unique opportunity for passengers to experience the charm of vintage rail travel, featuring excursions on authentic, restored rolling stock pulled by historic locomotives. Seasonal and themed rides, such as the popular Polar Express, Ghost Train of Metamora, and Easter Bunny Express, add to the diverse offerings.

Operated as a non-profit organization, the Whitewater Valley Railroad is staffed largely by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about preserving and showcasing the region’s railroading heritage.

It serves as a living museum, offering insights into the historical significance of railroads in the development of the Midwest. Through its engaging events and educational programs, the WVRR aims to provide a memorable experience for families, rail enthusiasts, and history buffs alike.

Tips for Enjoying Your Visit

- Book Early: Pumpkin trains are immensely popular and often sell out quickly. It's wise to book tickets in advance to secure a spot on your desired date and time.

- Dress Appropriately: Fall weather in Indiana can be unpredictable. Dress in layers to accommodate both cool and warm temperatures, suitable for the comfortable indoor train and often brisk outdoor activities.

- Arrive Early: Arriving well before departure time ensures you have ample time to park, participate in any pre-excursion activities, and settle into your train car.

- Bring a Camera: Capture memories of the beautiful landscapes and festive activities with plenty of photos.

Pumpkin trains offer a unique, festive way to experience the magic of autumn. Each train has its own unique charm and range of activities, making it worthwhile to explore more than one excursion if you're in the area during the fall season.

Whether you relish the anticipation of selecting the perfect pumpkin or simply enjoy the nostalgia and scenic journeys by rail, these experiences promise a memorable outing filled with fun, food, and fabulous landscapes. Pack your bags, hop aboard, and embark on a pumpkin train adventure that will delight and entertain you and your loved ones this fall.
